ASUS reveals the first GeForce RTX 4070 GPU that does not require any power cables

ASUS is showing off its RTX 4070 GPU that does not use any 12VHPWR connector.

The RTX 4070 Megalodon is the first known high-end Ada GPU that will not require any power cables or adapter. This GPU has a hidden PCI slot that is designed to carry the GPU's power without the need for external cables. This may be a more innovative and safer solution than the new 600W 12VHPWR connector that became a ‘hot’ topic last year, but not for a good reason.

What should be noted is that this connector is a concept used only by this one graphics card and only by one motherboard thus far. This is not an industry standard, and there is nothing suggesting that other companies would be involved in turning this idea into reality. However, such concepts are what may be an eye opener for some engineers at large VGA vendors that may eventually propose this type of power delivery system as an open standard.

Although ASUS is the largest motherboard maker, turning this idea into an industry standard, would require a lot of convincing. NVIDIA, who have just started using a new 12VHPWR (up to 600W) power connector on their RTX 40 GPUs, are probably the least interested in implementing new ideas for power delivery systems right now.

But should this type of connector be ever used on a large scale, it would solve multiple problems, including cable management and stronger physical support for the GPU, which as we know are only getting heavier now. Interestingly, the demo PC had VGA support still installed.
